Yucca is a genus of plants that includes more than 40 species of shrubs and trees:-
AppearanceYuccas are known for their sword-shaped leaves and large white flowers that bloom in panicles. They can grow to be 15–30 ft tall and wide.
-
HabitatYuccas are native to the Americas and the Caribbean, and can be found in a variety of habitats, including deserts, savannas, rainforests, and wet subtropical ecosystems.
-
UsesYuccas are often used as ornamental plants, but they have many other uses as well:
- Fibers: The leaves of many yucca species contain strong, fibrous tissue that can be used to make ropes, brushes, sandals, nets, and sleeping mats.
- Stems: The thick stem, or "heart", of a yucca plant can be roasted and eaten, or ground into patties. The stem is high in carbohydrates, especially before flowering.
- Sap: The sap of a yucca plant can be used to make mescal, agave nectar, and pulque.
- Fibers: The leaves of many yucca species contain strong, fibrous tissue that can be used to make ropes, brushes, sandals, nets, and sleeping mats.
-
Medicinal propertiesNative Americans traditionally used yucca for its medicinal properties. Some people also use yucca to treat conditions like osteoarthritis, high blood pressure, and joint pain, but there is no scientific evidence to support these uses.
